Winter Again?

Winter is On the Way!

Wow, it's hard to believe that it's almost time for the weather to get cold again - we're already hearing reports of cooler weather and starting to see the leaves changing so you know it's coming soon!

Fall clothing is showing up in the stores (and has been for a few weeks). While it was almost impossible to consider winter-wear a few weeks ago, suddenly it seems much more doable and the fabrics and styles that are showing up for Fall/Winter are fabulous.

Look for Fall to bring back the rich deep reds of winter, ranging from Rose to deepest Burgandy. Navy and Gray show up and of course Black and White remain staples. Note that colors are richer and more dramatic and require a slightly heavier hand with your make-up. Look for dramatic accessories, fabulous shoes, boots and bags and fur, leather, lace, sequins and feathers. The looks range from menswear to super-feminine with everything focusing on rich colors, shimmer and shine, texture and tons of drama. No matter what 'look' you prefer, you'll need to jazz up your makeup to 'get-it' this season.

Be sure and start with a good skincare routine. Your makeup will go on more smoothly and look and wear better if your skincare is 'working'. You may need to switch to a richer moisturizer and/or masque as it gets colder - keep an eye out, you may not notice it at first as your skin gradually dries a bit but when you start turning on the heat, you'll need to step up the moisturizer. Be sure and use a scrub, your skin can look dull and flaky, the scrub will help keep it smooth so your moisturizer works more effectively.

Perfect skin is a must as eyes, lips and cheeks show up as key focal points for daytime to dramatic makeup this season. To get the look, you MUST start with perfect skin. A good skincare routine and custom blend foundation and mineral powder are the keys. Be sure and conceal dark spots/shadows and blend out your foundation with a just-damp or dry sponge to get perfect, even coverage. If your foundation is the right color, you won't see any edges. Your foundation should NOT be used to darken or lighten your skintone (it'll show) but it should match perfectly to make your skin look impeccable. Concealer should be the same shade or one shade lighter. Concealer that is too light looks just as bad as skipping it. Dust with mineral powder to set your makeup, remove any hints of shine and improve the look and wear of your makeup. For all those that say they are too old for powder, our mineral powder is not the same thing as your mother's powder. It goes on sheer and has no talc (the culprit) and no preservatives, additives or dyes. It is all natural and actually good for your skin (please note that all mineral makeup is NOT the same - some brands do have additives and dyes so if you've tried it unsuccessfully before, you may not have tried our all-natural product).

Working from a perfect palette, there are a variety of looks for the season:

1) High Style - a very current looks that blends timelessness with a hint of feminine glamour (also great for evening): Smoky eye, lush, defined lashes, sheer slightly shimmery cheeks and a rich, strong lip. Blend shadows well for a smooth rich look. If your lid is big you can add a touch of shimmer under the brow, if not, highlight over the brow a bit). Lavish on mascara with a lined eye and line and fill in your lips with liner and top with lipstick. If you add shine to the brow and cheek, stay away from any shine on your lip (if it feels too harsh, top with a dot of gloss for a wetter but still flat lip). Be sure and do your brows - the strong colors for lips and eyes will cause lighter brows to fade away.

Color Suggestions:

Eyes: White Gold; Shimmering Mauve or Mauve Velvet; Charcoal, Chocolate or Tornado
Eyes (Mineral): Gold Glimmer; Radiance or After Hours; Bark or Nighttime
Liner: Black or Chocolate
Blush: Shooting Star or Rosewood Mineral Blush
Lips: St. Tropez Lipstick or Red Clay Lipstick and/or Au Natural Lip Gloss

2) Wine and Roses - a vamped up, higher glam look with rich lips, a crisp eye and soft cheeks: A jazzed up smoky eye with some color, lush, defined lashes, a hint of color to the cheeks and a rich but slightly softer lip. Blend shadows well for a smooth rich look then top with a hint of additional color. Be sure and line and define and mascara your lashes and line and fill in your lips with liner and top with a lip color in shades from Rose' to Burgandy.

Color Suggestions:

Eyes: Cream Dust; Bordeaux or Port; Charcoal, Chocolate or Tornado
Eyes (Mineral): Sauvignon Blanc; Bordeaux; Grapevine
Liner: Black or Vintage Liner
Blush: Natural Glow or Shiraz Mineral Blush
Lips: Angel Face Lipstick or American Beauty Lipstick and/or Sparkling Rose' Lip Gloss

3) Holiday Glam! - Discreet or bold with obvious sophistication - pure glam, but feminine and strong: Smoky blended eye with a hint of shimmer, a soft natural cheek and a strong lip with a hint of shimmer. Blend shadows well and pick a color as an accent and match your eye liner. Eyes are defined and lushly lashed and lips are well defined with color ranging from a strong nude (this is NOT no color) to the richest red of the season. Top with a touch of neutral sheer gloss for added shine.

Color Suggestions:

Eyes: Pearl Grey; Deep Sea Blue; White Gold
Eyes (Mineral): Silver Bells; Blue Christmas; Crystal Snowball
Liner: Black or Rhapsody Liner
Blush: Natural Glow or Angel's Kiss Mineral Blush
Lips: Party Dress Lipstick or Cheery Lipstick and Don't Peek Gloss

Overall Makeup Trends

  • Flawless Skin.
  • Lush, lined, defined lashes and Noticeable Brows.
  • Smoky eyes.
  • Shimmery, soft cheeks ranging from just a hint of color to slightly noticeable color.
  • A strong nude look - rich natural color a shade or two off your natural lip color with a liner. This is not NO lipstick - there should also be a hint of shimmer.
  • A Berry lip that is rich and deep. Be sure and line to keep the color in place.
  • A touch of gloss on the lips - Nothing is super-matte anymore, there is always a hint of wet or shine.

Hair for Colder Weather

If your hair is flying away, try the Daily Conditioning Rinse or Daily Conditioning Spray on a regular basis, boost once or twice a week with Intensive Conditioner or Mint Super Conditioner and add a dollop of Smoothing Glaze to your hair styling product. If you are using the Balancing Shampoo, try the Moisturizing Shampoo, if you are using the Moisturizing Shampoo, try the Conditioning Shampoo and see if these options don't help give your hair a bit more fluff and less of a frizzy or brittle look.

Body Care for Colder Weather

For dry, itchy skin, the Body Mist is the only option - it works well, is easy to use and dries quickly (and is unscented). Just mist over entire body, let dry and continue. It can also be used to freshen up your face and hair -- just mist over everything (great for Hat Hair - just Mist and fluff). Of course, you know to turn your shower from hot to warm and use a Body Wash instead of bar soap (which can add to the dryness of your skin). Use the Net Bath Sponge for super lather.

Skin Care for Colder Weather

It's absolutely time to add a moisturizing masque (Milk & Honey for normal to dry and maturing skin or Zinc Masque if your skin is more oily or sensitive) to your regular routine. You can boost your Masque by applying Serum underneath it. The Masque hydrates your skin. Apply a small amount over entire face and neck (and do the back of your hands too) and let dry 5-10 minutes. Rinse well in the shower (warm not hot) and pat dry. Follow with Toner and a richer Moisturizer than you usually use (don't forget those hands). We highly recommend adding a night creme if you are over 30 and aren't using one yet. Now is the time to really see the benefits and it'll definitely help your skin. Normal to Oily should use the Azulene Night Creme and the Botanical Night Creme is good for dry and maturing skin.

It's probably time to step up your moisturizer. Our moisturizers are listed below from the least rich to the richest - if your skin feels dry and tight by mid-day, you need to be using the moisturizer at least 1 level richer (below) the one you are using. Boost the moisturizer with a Serum and add a night creme for the most hydration (you can use the Serum underneath your night creme, for more hydration). The Serum contains intensive ingredients to hydrate your skin and make your moisturizer/masque/night creme more effective and longer lasting.
